One of my favorite challenges was getting to design an NFL player intro from the inside of the tunnel out to the field. I went on site for a survey. I took measurements and photos and then recreated the tunnel in 3D.
After that I got to work sculpting new set pieces in 3D. Within a couple iterations, we had full approval from the client. Because everything was created to scale, it was easy to get dimensions when creating the real set pieces.
