Halloween 2015. I decided to make an entire Van Gogh costume by painting a jacket and shirt, spraying my hair, and putting on face paint. It’s still one of my best costumes to date and made the front page of Reddit when I shared it there (mostly because people were debating about the pronunciation of Van Gogh, but hey, any publicity is good publicity).
Fast forward to 4 months later and AirBnB announces a promotion where you can stay in Van Gogh’s bedroom for one night. They had taken over an apartment in Chicago and one of the rooms had been transformed into Van Gogh’s painting “Bedroom in Arles”.
My friend Sandy and I heard they were releasing some more blocks for the promotion so we both sat on the internet refreshing and refreshing. I snagged a Tuesday slot, but she managed to pull a Friday slot. We booked that one and that was all we needed to plan a weekend trip to my favorite city in the U.S.
Finding a place in downtown Chicago for $10 is a steal, but that I got to fall asleep and wake up inside of a painting was a whole different kind of magic. Now throw in that Halloween costume from 5 months prior and it made for one epic photoshoot.
